1) Unfortunately, life’s little Twinkie gauge has run empty, so perhaps we could think of a replacement?
2) Knives are essential. However, one must make sure that they are good steel so that they will hold an edge as well as hold up under use. The Isis dagger might look really good, and I’m not familiar with the manufacture, but often the “fantasy style” knives have Pakistani steel, which not only doesn’t hold up under use, it has a bad reputation for not being able to hold a good edge. I would recommend German or Japanese steel, or even Toledo (Spain) steel. If none of these are available, I have personally made some knives and a sword from the front suspension of old Volkswagens, and I haven’t seen another steel that can hold up to them, as it is a strip of carbon spring steel designed to flex and not break, and it will hold a wicked edge. Good balance too, in case you need some throwing knives.

3) Baby wipes are a good idea, but perhaps a more versatile use of the space would be some rags that could be re-used and won’t dry out.

4) Coffee is great, but I know out here in the desert, nothing beats Mormon tea…it is natural ephedra and grows everywhere. Sage, too. And remember that sage has anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties.

5) Duct tape is a good idea, but it is pretty much a one-time use, non-replaceable item. We’re still going to need some rope, and when you know how to tie various knots, rope can do much more than duct tape can. Zip ties are also a great idea, although one-time use, but they don’t take up much room.

6) Walkie-talkies…excellent idea. I might also add a suggestion of rechargeable batteries and a solar battery charger.

7) For multi-use sanitizing, nothing beats a bottle of Everclear in your bug-out bag.

8) Water sanitization tablets. Very good for when you don’t have time to boil the water in the stream.

Just a few ideas I had. Way before this whole zombie apocalypse thing came about, my ex got it in his head to have a bug-out bag, because he used to have to have one when he was an Army brat kid. It kind of became a project of ours for a while, and it was fun to research and learn about, and it has helped me in planning for my back country trips.
